Living for Climate

    Carbon emissions savings calculator

Below is a list of suggestions of the kind of changes that are easy to make. If you agree to make any of these changes in your life or have already made those changes in your life, place questions a tick (or enter a number) against that suggestion. If a question does not apply to you because you have already taken that action (e.g. I don't drive to work anyway, I had sold my second car a few years ago or I already have a hybrid car) then please answer the question by placing a tick as if you are taking a pledge to do it.

After you have placed all the ticks, you will find total carbon saved by you every year. You can then enter your details and enter into an Award draw. Details will be announced soon.

(The questions and calculations are based on an Australian climate change group ARRCC web site at
    https://www.arrcc.org.au/sample_pledges_and_avoided_emissions )

    Transport section

    Walk locally

Walking rather than driving short distance locally may not only reduce your carbon footprint but also improve your health. Can you reduce your driving by 3 kms a week by taking a walk. Tick the box below and see a reduction in carbon emissions in Kgs.
    1
(By ticking here, you agree to walk (or have already been walking) 3 kms instead of driving every week. You save 29Kgs/week of carbon being dumped into air.)

    Public transport to work

If you are driving to work then try using public transport at least three days a week. Please choose in the box below as to how many days a week would you use public transport to work and see a reduction in carbon emissions in Kgs.
I agree to take (or have already been taking) public transport to work instead of driving for
    days a week.
For an average distance of 25 kms, you save 184Kgs/day of carbon being dumped into air.

Make your next car a hybrid

If you are driving to petrol/diesel car then switch to a hybrid car. Tick the box below and see a reduction in carbon emissions in Kgs.
    1
By ticking here, you agree to replace (or have already replaced) your regular car with a hybrid car. You save 1,730Kgs/year of carbon being dumped into air.

Have one less car in the family

If you have more than one car in the family, can you reduce number of cars by one. Tick the box below and see a reduction in carbon emissions in Kgs.
    1
By ticking here, you agree to reduce (or have already reduced) one car for your family if you have more than one car. You save 1,800Kgs/year of carbon being dumped into air.

Avoid one long-haul flight journey a year

Reduce long-haul return flight journeys by one a year.
    1
By ticking here, you agree to reduce (or have already reduced or do not take even) one long haul flight every year. By doing so, You save about 5,300Kgs/year of carbon being dumped into air. (4,600 per Melbourne-Los Angeles return, 6,000 per Melbourne-London return, average 5,300)

Avoid stop-overs on long haul flights

If you have to take a long haul flight, avoid stop-overs on long haul flight. Tick the box below and see a reduction in carbon emissions in Kgs.
    1
By ticking here, you agree to take a direct long haul flight instead of taking a stop over (or have already been avoiding stop overs on long haul flights). By doing so, You save about 1,325Kgs/year of carbon being dumped into air. (estimated 25% of emissions of an entire long haul flight are avoided - source: GreenFaith)

    Avoid air travel within Australia

Avoid air travel except for family emergencies. Please tick square box labelled 1 if you can avoid only one flight per year. Tick 2 if you can avoid two flights per year.
    123
By choosing a value here, you agree that you will reduce (or have already reduced) corresponding number of your flights within Australia. By doing so, You save about 230Kgs/flight/year of carbon being dumped into air. (eg, 460 for 2 x Melb-Syd return)

    Energy section

    Replace all lights with LED’s

    1
By ticking here, you agree that you will replace (or have already replaced) all household bulbs with LED bulbs. By doing so, You save about 470Kgs/year of carbon being dumped into air. (LED’s use 75% less electricity)

    Switch household electricity to GreenPower

You can ask your electricity provider that you want to switch to green power.
    1
By ticking here, you agree that you will switch to (or have already switched to) greenpower. By doing so, You save about 5,900Kgs/year of carbon being dumped into air. (You will be charged slightly more but your electricity provider will buy green energy on your behalf giving impetus to renewable energy production.)

    Install a solar array

    123456
Please tick a square box corresponding to KW rating of your solar power. Most households use 2KW. By ticking here, you agree that you will install (or have already installed) solar panels. By doing so, You save about 1,300Kgs per KW per year of carbon being dumped into air.)

Stop using clothes dryer for a year

Dry your clothes in sunlight on a clothes line.
    1
By ticking here, you agree that you agree not to use clothes dryer or have not been using a clothes dryer. By doing so, You save about 280Kgs/year of carbon being dumped into air.)

Halve your use of air conditioning

    1
By ticking here, you agree that you agree to run your air conditioner only half of the time. By doing so, You save about 930Kgs/year of carbon being dumped into air. (assuming typical usage)

Decrease thermostat 1 degree in Winter

Reduce the thermostat setting on your air conditioner by one degree in winter without feeling cold. Tick the box below and see a reduction in carbon emissions in Kgs.
    12
By ticking here, you agree that you will reduce the thermostat by 1 or 2 degrees in winter. By doing so, You save about 150Kgs/degree/year of carbon being dumped into air.

Increase thermostat 1 degree in Summer

Increase the thermostat setting on your air conditioner by one degree in summer without feeling hot. Tick the box below and see a reduction in carbon emissions in Kgs.
    12
By ticking here, you agree that you will increase the thermostat by 1 or 2 degrees in summer. By doing so, You will save about 40Kgs/degree/year of carbon being dumped into air.)

Eat meat only once each week

    1
By ticking here, you agree that you will eat meat only once a week or have been eating meat only once a week. You are free to eat plant based and dairy foods. By doing so, You save about 690Kgs/year of carbon being dumped into air.
